Inside Al Qaeda: Global Network of Terror by Rohan Gunaratna

Book Description
Inside Al Qaeda examines the leadership, ideology, structure, strategies, and tactics of the most violent politico-religious organization the world has ever seen. The book is based on five years of research on Al Qaeda, including extensive interviews with its members; field research in Al Qaeda-supported conflict zones in Central, South and Southeast Asia and the Middle East; and monitoring Al Qaeda infiltration of diaspora and migrant communities in North America and Europe. Rohan Gunaratna traces the organization´s genesis and development in Pakistan, Sudan, and Afghanistan from the late 1980s to the present. A vicious by-product of the anti-Soviet multinational Afghan jihad, Al Qaeda draws its membership from three dozen Middle Eastern nations as well as from Asia and elsewhere. The book sheds light on Al Qaeda´s role in financing and providing combat trainers and vanguard fighters for multiple guerrilla, terrorist, and conventional campaigns in Asia, Africa, the Caucuses, and the Balkans. In addition, the author covers the clandestine Al Qaeda operational network in the West. In order for the international community to destroy Al Qaeda, Gunaratna argues for the need for a multipronged, multiagency, and multinational response.
