Marriage in the '90s is risky business. Over two million couples will marry this year--and nearly half will eventually divorce. Learning to "save your marriage" before you get married is the focus of this book. The authors ask insightful questions that help couples identify and deal in advance with potential marriage problems.
The Parrotts suggest seven question for engaged couples and newlyweds to ask, with a view to identifying and overcoming stumbling blocks to a healthy marriage.

The publisher, www.zondervan.com:
According to a 1995 study reported by Reuters, the U.S. has gone from being the society with the most marriages in the world to the one with the most divorces and unwed mothers. The two-year study, Marriage in America: A Report to the Nation, stated the percentage of married adults decreased from 72 percent in 1970 to 62 percent in 1990. "For too long the trend has been to fall in love, marry, and hope for the best," says Les Parrott III, coauthor with his wife Leslie of the new book, Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts. They reason that marriage does not have to be a gamble. Les (a psychologist) and Leslie (a marriage and family therapist) have counseled hundreds of married couples. "We have learned that living happily ever after is less a myth than the mastery of certain skills," they say. These skills comprise the answers to the seven questions on which the book is based. Facing the myths of marriage, identifying one's style of love, developing habitual happiness, communicating, and bridging the gender gap are a few of the topics covered. The authors have also provided companion workbooks, one each for men and women. Marriage problems arise, say the authors, because "we marry an image and only later discover the real person." This should not lead any to despair for, "such is the dance of love. Day in and day out we clumsily shuffle, stumble, and even step on one another's feet in our relationships. But that does not diminish the graceful moments when two partners finally experience the same rhythm of passion, intimacy, and commitment."
