One of the great courtroom movies. An army officer (Ben Gazzara) is accused of murder, and hires "country lawyer" James Stewart to defend him. Stewart goes head to head with a slick big-city prosecutor (George C. Scott, superb in one of his first films) as the case becomes increasingly graphic; in particular, Stewart must prove that the soldier's wife (Lee Remick) was raped, thus precipitating her husband's murderous response. The explicit detail of the trial scenes was still racy in 1959, which was nothing new for director Otto Preminger; he'd been trying to get adult material into films throughout the decade. Preminger shoots the trial scenes with cool fluency, never hyping the material and always forcing the audience to be the jury. Even after the verdict is delivered, we're not quite sure about the guilt or innocence of the accused. Scott and Arthur O'Connell were Oscar-nominated in the Supporting Actor category, and Stewart, in one of his craftiest performances, garnered a Best Actor nomination. The judge is played by Joseph Welch, the real-life lawyer whose homespun jibes helped expose the evil of Senator Joseph McCarthy on national TV in the mid-'50s. The innovative jazz score is by the great Duke Ellington, who also appears in the film. John Grisham, eat your heart out.
