Kwaidan on DVD

Synopsis
"Kwaidan" means "ghost story," and though this supernatural omnibus does not skimp on scares, it also employs strange color shifts and sensual imagery to underscore its eerie atmosphere. A quartet of stories -- "Black Hair," "The Woman of the Snow," "Hoichi, the Earless," and "In a Cup of Tea" -- invites viewers into an ominous realm. Phantoms, grinningly mad, populate this netherworld and bolt its doors once their victims enter. --This text refers to the VHS, subtitled in English, widescreen edition of this video
Video Description
A collection of four tales of the supernatural written by Lafcadio Hearn. "Black Hair" - a samurai warrior divorces his wife to marry a rich woman. Horror awaits him when he returns to his first wife. "Yuki-Onna" - the story of a woodcutter with a very dark secret. "Hoichi The Earless" - a bhikku defends himself with sutras against the ghost of a long-dead samurai. "The Cup of Tea" - a samurai drinks a cup of tea with a special ingredient, which is the face of another warrior who appears in the flesh. This is second in director Kobayashi's samurai trilogy, between "Harakiri" and "Samurai Rebellion."
