Chinese Ghost Story starring Leslie Cheung, Joey Wong

Perpetual-motion editing, wildly inventive martial arts choreography, a persistent edge of sly comedy--all this, and a Flying Giant Tongue Monster too! This landmark 1987 ghost thriller from Hong Kong is a prime specimen of the industry's magical-action genre, rooted in Chinese legend. It's also a cross-dimensional love story, in which a traveling scholar (Leslie Cheung) falls for a beautiful ghost and has to raid Hell to get her back. (Echoes of the Western legend of Orpheus are probably intentional.) The producer, Tsui Hark, is himself one of the Hong Kong New Wave's snappiest filmmakers (Peking Opera Blues), and a lot of his kaleidoscopic craftsmanship has rubbed off on the nominal director, Ching Siu-tung. Amid the treetop leaps and flashing swords, there are also some lovely quiet moments--like the little frosty puff of the ghost-girl's breath that wafts a deadly snake into the air. And don't miss the virtuoso comic set piece in which the smitten youth desperately hides from the ghost-girl's ogre guardian in a splashy tub of bubble bath.
