Roman clergyman and doctor of the Church, born in Trier, Germany. He practised law in Rome, and in 369 was appointed consular prefect of Upper Italy, whose capital was Milan. When the bishopric fell vacant in 374, he was chosen bishop by universal acclamation, even though he was still only a catechumen undergoing instruction. He was quickly baptized, and consecrated bishop eight days later. He fought for the integrity of the Church at the imperial court, resisting Empress-regent Justina over the introduction of Arian churches. He introduced the use of hymns and made many improvements in the liturgy, notably the Ambrosian ritual and Ambrosian chant. Feast day 7 December.
