Pam Grier worked as a switchboard operator for Roger
Corman, who eventually helped her get cast in such early-'70s
drive-in fodder as The Big Doll House and Women in Cages. Doll
House director Jack Hill gave Grier a significant break by placing
her in the lead of the 1973 Coffy, which--along with her history-making
role as an independent, tough heroine in Foxy Brown--set her at
the forefront of the growing "blaxploitation" movement
in action films. Smart, no-nonsense, and voluptuous, Grier became
both sex symbol and feminist icon, but by the late '70s she began
a long haul toward being taken more seriously. Quentin Tarantino
made a virtual homage to Pam
Grier with Jackie Brown, in which she gave a wonderful performance.
