A brilliant cinematographer whose masterful, atmospheric use of
lighting built upon the experiments of the German expressionists,
Vienna-born Sternberg (like Erich von Stroheim, Sternberg added
the "von" to impart a patrician glamour to his credits)
is chiefly remembered for his remarkable screen partnership with
Marlene Dietrich. Buoyed by the international triumph of The Blue
Angel, which was filmed in Germany, von Sternberg and his protégé
emigrated to Hollywood and made six more pictures that explored
the actress's unique feminine mystique. Although perceived as
a Svengali in shaping Dietrich, her elevation to icon status ultimately
eclipsed the director's own notoriety. Yet von Sternberg deserves
consideration as a poet in the exploration of black and white
film and in his powerful sense of production design.
