One of the leading lights of Britain's Free Cinema movement in
the 1950s, the Czech-born Karel Reisz helped set the stage for
a new wave of films concerned with everyday life in England. As
a critic and producer, Reisz was frequently partnered with Lindsay
Anderson (This Sporting Life) in defining and furthering the cause,
and Reisz himself made film history in 1958 with his documentary
We Are the Lambeth Boys. Since then he has been selective about
his projects, though not all of them have been artistic triumphs.
He tends to draw passionate, full performances from actors, and
when this occurs in his more powerful films (The Gambler, Sweet
Dreams), the results are stunning.
