When the erstwhile pop duo Tom & Jerry resurfaced in 1964 as folkies Simon & Garfunkel, there was little reason to believe they'd become one of the powerhouses of the decade. Indeed, when a studio-tweaked version of "Sounds of Silence" broke into the top 20 in late 1965, the twosome were on the verge of calling it quits. Instead, they got their second wind, and the rest is history.
